Whether you call it by its slang name, "sawing logs," or its medical name, "stertor," snoring is common. You snore when something blocks the flow of air through your mouth and nose. The sound is caused by tissues at the top of your airway that strike each other and vibrate. Many adults snore, especially men. Snoring increases with age and is usually harmless.

Let's discuss a few cures for snoring that do not involve a doctor visit. Please note that if your snoring problem is at all serious, it is vital that you consult with a doctor about it.

Some people snore when they sleep on their back. An obvious solution to this is to sleep on your side. To ‘enforce' sleeping on your side, try putting a tennis ball in a sock, and then pin the sock to the back of your pyjama pants. This will cause irritation to you when you roll on your back, leading you to roll back onto your side.

Cutting back on drinking is another home-grown snoring remedy. Alcohol relaxes the muscles in your throat. Relaxed muscles and tissues can cause restricted airways, leading to snoring. Don't have an alcoholic drink for at least four hours before bedtime.

The same applies to sleeping pills and antihistamines. Treatments such as these can have the same effect as alcohol, they'll relax throat muscles and tissues and you'll end up with restricted airways.

Being overweight is another problem that can lead to snoring. Obese people tend to snore a lot due to buildups of fatty tissues in the neck. This weighs down and constricts the air way, causing obstruction problems and leading to snoring. The only way to help this issue is to lose weight.

There are store-offered remedies in the form of pills and herbal cures for snoring. These store-offered remedies should be used with considerable research and scepticism. Be sure to do your research before buying such products at drug stores. Check out consumer reviews, online articles, and entities such as the Better Business Bureau to make sure that the product you wish to purchase is safe and effective. Also, remember that what works for some doesn't for others, and there is no one cure for snoring. Different individuals require different treatments.

Don't take excessive snoring lightly. It can be a sign of a serious sleep disorder called sleep apnea. This means you stop breathing for periods of more than 10 seconds at a time while you sleep. Sleep apnea is serious, but there are treatments that can help. See a doctor about sleep apnea if your problem is serious.
